The Blessing

The Blessing

Friends -

I actually finished this almost one month ago but I found myself unable to complete the Donation Art follow-up tasks of writing the story and posting it to all of you because my computer chose to collapse while I was in Oregon. Now safely back in my California nest, I can get some things done.

‘The Blessing’ is about true events that happen every year in Placerville, and about which I have only a superficial understanding. I do know that annually in the weeks of December, January and February, the Monks come to our little town from Tibetan refugee camps across the ocean. They come dressed in rust and ochre, exuding peace and bring with them meditations and chants. They build for us an intricate mandala out of colored sand using an arduous method of tapping the grains out onto a large table for everyone to meditate upon and admire.  The whole time there is chanting in the incense-filled room that leaves one feeling oddly open, relaxed and enlightened.

At the end of their stay, they collect the colored sands of the mandala and this year, poured them into waters of 24 Carrot Farms Pond. That is what this painting is about.  A more appropriate destination could not be found, in my humble opinion.

You may have heard about a separate group of Tibetan Monks, and their adopted dog, Aloka, who walked across the country (through, heat, rain and snow) – from Texas to Washington DC – spreading their message of peace. It was a remarkable juxtaposition of love and kindness during what is arguably the most hate-filled period in our U.S. history.  We so needed that, and still could use more.

I am embarrassed at how little I know about the teachings and accomplishments of these Monks, but what I can offer you is this website which has more and better information:        https://www.placervillefriendsoftibet.org/pfot

As always, this painting is available for your donation to a good cause, but if you are interested, let’s talk about a non-profit that would benefit the efforts of these Monks? Here is to Hope for Peace in this World,
